| Mrs. Eddy said at one time, "The papers are writing up my history; the history of my ancestry; writing lies. My history is a holy one." (Divinity Course and General Collectanea, compiled by Richard Oakes, p.24)
From her teachings as well as many of the records preserved of her relations to her students, her church and the public, one can understand the sentiment she has expressed so forcefully. Mrs. Eddy always gave the spiritual precedent. She never made allowance for the human auxiliary at the expense of the spiritual imperative, and this was never more true than in the preservation and chronicling of her so-called human history. For decades the public has seen much of the mortal historythe material facts surrounding the life of someone who spent 90 years on earthfacts written in biographies, newspaper articles, even books, videos and other information published by her church and others. While there is merit in the appropriate recitation of the human history concerning such a remarkable figure such as Mary Baker Eddy, it is not the human perspective that should take precedence in presenting the "history" of this woman to the world, especially by her own church. At least, this is the consistent conclusion revealed by Mrs. Eddy. Christian Science Library recognizes the absolute priority of the spiritual perspective when offering what it does to the world, as representing aspects of Mrs. Eddy's history. Mrs. Eddy recognized that spiritual sense must take ascendancy over the human, or the larger life lesson is lost. Her entire life was a lesson in making the Word flesh. It was an unparalleled example to others that would define how to live what the Master, Christ Jesus, taught. This history is what holds the greatest value as a lesson for humanity. It is this history that Christian Science Library hopes to impart is some small measure so that all can see the selfless, loving character of this woman who will some day be acknowledged as the greatest woman who ever lived. The following authors bring in large measure this appreciation of the divine priority to their expression of a proper history of Mary Baker Eddy and her church. History of the Christian Science Movement by Wm. Lyman Johnson, 990pp in 2 vol. (Xerox) $38. This remarkable history was commissioned by Mary Beecher Longyear and published by Zion Research Foundation. Immediately upon its publication (1927) it was suppressed by the church so very few copies ever saw the light of day. Vol. 1, 465pp - $19 Vo l. 2, 524pp - $25 The Discovery, The Founding, The Forever Leader by Doris Grekel Currently, all Grekel hardcovers are out of print. This trilogy is perhaps the greatest historical biography ever done on Mary Baker Eddy. What Mrs. Eddy labored to establish for the benefit of mankind is brought forth in such simplicity and tender regard that it clearly illustrates the spiritual substance of Mrs. Eddy's entire life and mission as the chosen revelator of truth to this age. Mrs. Grekel's three-volume biography shows a depth of loving understanding. The massive amount of research contained in this work is sure to satisfy the most scrupulous historian. However, it is the spiritual impetus behind Mrs. Grekel's literary achievement that gives us such a penetrating account of Mrs. Eddy's life-work, the trials she faced as well as the triumphs. Mrs. Grekel never loses sight of Mrs. Eddy's never-failing reliance on God in all she did. The Healer: The Healing Work of Mary Baker Eddy by David L. Keyston This book chronicles the awe-inspiring Christian healing work of the greatest spiritual healer since Christ Jesus. Mary Baker Eddy expressed such great love and dominion through her understanding of God's Love for man that it enabled her to "heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out devils," all through prayer alone realizing man's oneness with God. From first-hand accounts, feel the inspiration she received; feel the love this woman expressed, and feel the joy experienced by those who were healed by her. You will feel blessed. You will see how it is possible to heal through prayer today. See why Mark Twain, referring to her discovery and the method of healing she established, called her, "the benefactor of the age," in referring to her discovery and the method of healing she established. 279 pages, quality hardbound (First edition-blue or red cloth binding). $25 Extremely limited quantities available; out of print. 282 pages, quality paperback (Second, expanded edition, with full color cover). $16.95 Mary Baker Eddy: The Historical and Prophetic Perspective, by Paul R. Smillie Hardcover $19.95 Special limited leather edition $49.00 Mary Baker Eddy: Her Spiritual Footsteps, Gilbert C. Carpenter, CSB, and Gilbert C. Carpenter, Jr., CSB From the AUTHORS NOTE: "Pre-eminently in the world Mrs. Eddy's life stands forth as the history of the one who has thrown the most light on the unseen and unknown claims of evil, as they are presented to all spiritually-minded persons endeavoring to find the way out of this human maze called mortal existence. Therefore, it took only the desire of the Christian Science Board of Directors in Boston, expressed through Judge Clifford P. Smith, that we should compile this material, to crystalize certain conceptions which were originally intended to clear up several misunderstandings regarding Mrs. Eddy which had been circulated by those who knew something of the inside operation of Mrs. Eddy's household,- by throwing upon her footsteps the light of spiritual understanding. The method of approach to Mrs. Eddy's experience that is portrayed in this volume, grew out of the realization that the effort to judge her life from the human standpoint of good has never struck one true note regarding the character of God. Nevertheless, when her activities and teaching in her household are understood from the spiritual standpoint, they set forth lucidly and extensively the true nature of Deity as expressed through man by reflection."
